A security key proves it’s really you by asking for a tap on a physical device. In CoinCover Control, your keys can do two jobs:
  • Sign-in: as your second factor after your password or magic link.
  • Sensitive actions: if your organisation requires it, you confirm actions such as voting on a recovery request with a tap of your key.
You register a key once and Control uses it for both.

What you can use

Your organisation may limit this, for example to hardware keys only, or to particular models such as YubiKeys. Control tells you if a key isn’t accepted. You need an up-to-date browser such as Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
New to hardware keys? Your key’s manufacturer covers device set-up, such as creating a PIN. For YubiKeys, see Yubico’s set-up guide. Your PIN is stored on the key, never on our servers.

Before you start

If your organisation requires security keys, have two ready before you sign in — one for daily use and a backup — unless CoinCover has agreed a different number with your organisation. Keep the backup somewhere safe and separate from your main key.

Register your keys

There are two places you might be asked to register a key.

When you set up two-factor authentication

On your first sign-in, Control asks you to Set up two-factor authentication.
1

Choose Security key

Select Security key. You only see the options your organisation allows.
2

Tap your key

Insert your key, or hold it to your phone for NFC, and tap it when your browser asks. To use a passkey instead, follow your browser’s prompt to create one, and unlock it with Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello or your password manager.
3

Sign in again

Once the key is registered, sign in again and use it to confirm it’s you.

When your organisation requires keys

If your organisation requires security keys for sensitive actions, Control shows Let’s secure your account until you’ve registered enough keys. It takes about three minutes.
1

Register your first key

Give the key a name you’ll recognise, such as Office YubiKey 5C. Insert it and tap it when your browser asks.
2

Register your backup key

Remove the first key, then do the same with your backup key.
3

Finish

When you see You’re all set, select Go to dashboard.

Confirm a sensitive action

When your organisation requires security keys, Control asks you to Verify your identity before:
  • voting to approve or reject a recovery request, or cancelling that vote
  • voting on a change to an Access Control List, or cancelling that vote
  • removing a security key
Select Authorise and tap your key. You won’t be asked again for the next 30 minutes, unless your organisation has set a different time.

Manage your keys

Open the profile menu at the top right, select Profile, then Security. Under Security keys you can see each key, when it was registered and when it was last used.
  • Add a key: select Add security key and follow the prompts.
  • Remove a key: you can’t remove your only second factor, so set up an authenticator app or another key first. If your organisation requires a number of keys, register a replacement before removing one.
A key marked Not accepted by this organisation’s security key policy doesn’t meet your organisation’s rules. Register one that does.

If you lose a key

1

Sign in with your backup

Use your backup key, or your authenticator app if you’ve set one up.
2

Register a replacement

In Profile → Security, select Add security key and register the new one.
3

Remove the lost key

Remove the lost key from the list so it can no longer be used.
If you’ve lost every key and don’t have an authenticator app, or you’ve already registered as many keys as your organisation allows, contact support@coincover.com. We reset your two-factor authentication and you register your keys again.

Troubleshooting

Update your browser, or switch to a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
Your organisation may only allow hardware keys, or particular models. Try a different key, or ask your Organisation Owner which keys are allowed.
If you belong to more than one organisation, a key has to meet every organisation’s rules. Contact CoinCover support and we’ll help you find a key that works for all of them.
Each request to tap your key lasts five minutes. Start again and tap your key when your browser asks.

For Organisation Owners

CoinCover enables security keys to be added to your organisation. Contact your account manager or support@coincover.com to:
  • require a security key as the second factor at sign-in
  • require a security key to confirm sensitive actions
  • set how many keys each person registers (two by default) and the maximum they can hold (three by default)
  • allow hardware keys only, or particular models such as YubiKeys
  • change how long a confirmation lasts (30 minutes by default)
If your organisation uses SSO, sign-in MFA is handled by your identity provider, but you can still require security keys for sensitive actions.
